Frequently Asked Questions

Please take a moment to read through this before deciding to work with Joan.

Do I really need a coach?

Nope. You can live your entire life without needing or working with a coach, and your life will turn out fine. If you're happy with "fine", then we don't need to talk. I'm guessing that you want more from your life, though, or you wouldn't be reading this. If you're willing to invest some time, effort and money in yourself; if you're looking for something more than you have; if you're ready to challenge yourself and take your life to an extraordinary level; if you believe that your life, your happiness and your future are worth investing in, then you're ready for coaching. To learn more, read my article, "Six Benefits of Working With a Coach".

But how does this coaching thing work?

Well, it's like this. As your coach, I'm a partner in your life, working with you to establish your goals and desires, and the means to get you there. Don't worry if you don't know yet what your goals and desires are – we'll uncover them together.

There's no set agenda. Generally, prior to each coaching session, you'll provide me with a list of items that you'd like to work on and we go from there, or I'll propose that we talk about an area where I see you might need some direction.

I'll point out perspectives you haven't considered, challenge you to reach farther than you imagined you could, introduce you to new techniques for living your life to the fullest, help you plan your next steps, hold you accountable, and celebrate your successes with you.

Have you ever worked with someone in my field?

I've worked with people from many different backgrounds and work experiences. Even if I haven't worked with someone in your field, that's not a disadvantage. People who hire coaches generally share the same characteristics:

  • They aren't satisfied with the status quo – they want more from their life, even if they aren't sure what "more" looks like
  • They want to grow and stretch themselves
  • They want lives that are easier, more fulfilling, and more fun

Where you came from isn't important. Where you're going, is.

So, what kinds of people do you work with?

I like to work with strong, forward-thinking people who are willing to challenge themselves to go after what they really want in life, and who have the resources (financial and otherwise) to get it. If you're a professional skeptic, want to whine about how life is unfair, complain about how you weren't picked for dodge ball in grade school, or want someone to hold your hand, I respectfully request that you find another coach. We probably wouldn't be a good fit.

If you know there's more out there, if you know you can live an extraordinary life, and if you're willing to play with some different techniques to get there, then let's talk.

Oh…and you should have a sense of humor – a slightly warped one is even better.

Why does coaching work?

World-class athletes and musicians know that working a coach makes them even better. Tiger Woods has a coach; Venus and Serena Williams have a coach; David Beckham has a coach. No matter who you are, hard work and knowledge can only take you so far. To really succeed, you need someone to help you train, help you set goals, develop strategies you haven't thought of, and uncover strengths you didn't know you had.

Imagine what you could do with your life if you had someone who was always in your corner and who always believed in you, who had no agenda except for what is best for you and who could guide you to uncover your own unique skills and talent – what kind of life could you be living, if you had all that going for you?

You may not win the Masters or Wimbledon, but your goals are just as important as Tiger Woods' and are just as worthy of investing in.

But I don’t live near you.

It doesn't matter. All my coaching is done either on the phone or via e-mail. Telephone coaching is convenient and easy to manage. You can do it on your lunch hour or at home in your jammies. We just need to find a time to talk that works for both of us.

How much does this cost?

I have a variety of coaching programs that depend on your needs, your time limitations and your budget. Download my fee schedule here.

I think I'm ready, but I have a few questions.

Good – it sounds like you're drawn to making some positive changes in your life. I invite you to e-mail me your questions, or call me at 410-266-6512 and let's set up a time to chat. The call is free, except for your long-distance charges, and there's no obligation once we've talked. I can’t be any fairer than that!

OK, I'm ready. How do we get started?

Great! One of the attributes of successful people is that they are moved to take action when they see something they want. If you do a "gut-check", you know what's right for you and you go for it.

Here's your next step. Call me at 410-266-6512 or e-mail me and tell me what program will work best for you. We'll then set up a time to talk and get to know one another a little and then firm up our regular schedule. You'll get a welcome packet and all the tools you need to get started.

I'm still not sure this is right for me. How can I learn more about you?

No problem. If it's not the right time, that's absolutely fine. No rush on my end...I'm here when you need me. In the meantime, you can sign up for my monthly newsletter, read my blog and sign up for regular updates, buy my e-book, "Loving Your Job, Living Your Life" and check out the free assessments and other information on my website.
